With the new job and new location come new passwords. I can’t count how many I know (mainly because it’s more than five and brains are not turing machines and memory recall doesn’t work that way). It’s worse than that—I’ve started using templates to generate passwords so that, knowing one, you might guess others; bad policy. So what are my options? First, what are my requirements?

  1. Reasonably secure.
  2. Portable. I don’t want the solution tied to one computer or a single operating system.
  3. Driverless. I don’t want to install any priopietary software.
  4. Cheap. Ok, just kidding; I’m a single-income single with money falling out of my nose. I want cool and I want it now! Screw cheap.
  5. Easy to use. This sort of goes in hand with portable.

I constucted that list just now, after I’ve already looked at the options. Bad methodology to be sure, but I’m not ISO 9000, so who’s worried. Here are a couple options:

  1. Buy a handheld and put a secure database on it Pros: portable and self-contained. Cons: expensive, bulky, requires batteries.
  2. Buy a standard USB storage device and encrypt data. Pros: cheap. Cons: requires a host computer and platform independent encryption software.
  3. Buy a biometric USB device. Pros: way cool, no passwords. Cons: expensive, requires host computer again, not many on the market.

My favorite option is the third. My favorite device is the award-winning Touch Disk. It is—however—a pricey 239,000ì›? plus shipping. Fortunately there are domestic offerings, including Sony’s high-priced Puppy and a couple of generic clones.

What’s a guy to do?
