Virgin Mobile subersively wishes you the best Chrismahanukwanzakah ever!

We are smack dab in the middle of that secular juggernaught called The Holidays. Go and pretend you belive that giving is better than recieving. Go and spend your dollars in earnest support of the American Economy—remember: think global, act local. But—for the love of Santa—don’t bring any specific or uninclusive God in on the party.

America is a funny place, torn between agnostic materialism and protestant puritanism. That’s a dangerous combination. The protestant says, “there is no mortal sin,” and the materialism replies, “but if there were, it would be smoking, drinking, and MacDonalds.” They agree and summon forth: the forces of prohibition, The Drug War, the tobacco lawsuits, and the currently faddish notion that legislating fast-food out of existance is a consider-able option. Not that I smoke; I don’t. I don’t drink very much either, and control my diet with spartan brutality. Don’t forget regular attendance at the non-denominational naval station gym.

Will & Grace joked that gym is for church for gay people. We go there to work out our healthful salvation and worship the temple of the human spirit—men and women, gay and straight, democrat and even republican—are all loved the same.

That was my initial reaction to the Will & Grace joke—”it’s funny because it’s true”—but it’s also true. The gym really is like church (and for everyone). Some days I’m happy and raring to go; other days my sloth grabs hold of any trivial excuse to avoid attendance. Hard work, perseverance, and self-discipline pay off in the long run.

Just some stuff I was thinking about.
