Ah, Wilderness! · Mar 12, 07:00 PM

“nostalgic paean to the rites of adolescence”

This begins the blurb on the back cover of a 1976 made-for-TV production of Eugene O’Neill’s play “Ah, Wilderness!” Acording to my internet sources, it’s his only comedy. I wasn’t laughing. The dysfunction was sad, and the normalcy of the archtypes in plot and character depressed me. Like the guy in the intro said, this is the childhood O’Neill wishes he had. It’s certainly heads over tails above most of the coming-of-age movies I’ve seen.

Directed: Arvin Brown, 1976.
Summary: Dysfunction and Sensible Americana
