“muscular balance of aesthetic splendor and dazzling swordplay”

More escapist fantasy from the Chinese director behind Hero. This movie is beautiful. The action is painted with color and choreography; it’s live action anime with no American pretensions or referencing—this cinema will be the reference for the Tarantino’s of the future. There’s a lot more plot than there needs to be, and the movie benefits. The climactic love-triangle combat sequence caps a great series of incredulous battles, betrayals, and love-torn drama.

Directed: Zhang Yimou, 2004.
Summary: Gorgeous, Tragic, Fantastic, Chinese

  1. Hmmm. Trying to remember if this or “Hero” was what my flatmates in London drug me to.

I remember golden, autumnal color sequence with flying leaves.
