Spring up behind you, · Apr 10, 10:26 PM

The sun was out and I was out with my camera, walking and walking and walking all weekend. It’s evening, and my neck is still warm; I think I got too much sun. Yesterday I saw my first Newport mansion, The Marble House, constructed by the Vanderbilts, setting of movie The Great Gatsby, and vertex of old-fashioned Sufrage. It’s your typical seventy room summer cottage, only not all the rooms are constructed entirely from marble. There’s the one that covered every-square-inch in 22 caret gold leaf. There’s the french silk. Lots of french silk.

Trees and flowers and shrubs are budding up; the eager early risers are blooming now. Everyone else will open up later this week, I’m sure of it. It’s gorgeous, and I was out taking pictures in short sleeves.

I visited the Blink Gallery, and met Peter Buotte, an internationally known artist and marine. I walked in to see two thirds of his art under black veils, with an exposed large centerpiece showing two hooded terrorists standing over a blindfolded man. Peter was showing “To Baghdad and Back,” a collection of reflections on year of service. His pieces were dense, layered, and visually linguistic.

Peter is working to organize an art competition in Iraq. His vision is to have an Iraqi artist selected to create a public sculpture from the metal currently occupied portraying the bust of Sadam.
