March of the Penguins · Aug 7, 10:29 PM

Morgan Freeman narrates the story of the Empire Penguin’s breeding cycle. The beauty of the glaciers and the snow plays against the fierce antartic winds. Penguins swim, slide, and waddle their way into the coldest winter on Earth to pair off and then sacrifice food for months at a time, all for offspring. The loss of hatchlings and elderly to the cold hits hard; it’s not a nature film for small kids—the time-lapsed egg-freezing drives the point home. There’s no strong ending, as in life.

Directed: Bonne Pioche, 2005
Summary: Life is lovable, nature terrible and everything beautiful.

  1. This is also a movie about adaptability; in two ways. The penguins could be given high marks for adapting to the incredibly cold environment. However, they seem to lack the key ability to adapt by changing their environment (i.e. moving to Australia, setting fires, etc). Chris    Aug 8, 01:12 PM    #

  2. ..adding a tragic note. “Why, why don’t you move south to Canada, with warm water and fish for everyone?”

The outside-box thinker-penguin who tries probably dies. It's like settling on a local minimum. It's like high activation energy. It's like you can't teach an old dog greek. Tom    Aug 8, 01:17 PM    #
