Posted on NUWC’s intranet home page—one of the Japanese mini subs that attacked Pearl Harbor, found in late 2003, posted as Hot News:

Speaking of work: they blocked mail.yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, and etc. a few weeks ago in response to either Navy or DOD directives. Now they have blocked outgoing traffic on SSH port 22. In early March foil shields will be installed on all windows.

Next: taxes. Rhode Island has a ‘use tax’—a 7% tax voluntarily paid on purchases made out-of-state on items brought into Rhode Island where no sales tax was paid on the out-of-state purchase, but which would have been subject to a sales tax in Rhode Island. Fortunatly, I keep email receipts for the bigger ticket items and was able to account for an extra $60 in state taxes due.

I also ran across this teh pretty awesome portrait:

Finally: Brokeback Mountain. It’s fated that I not see this movie. I am coming to terms with this scientific fact. Here’s how it will pan out: The Jane Pickens Theater will open Brokeback on the evening of Feb. 10 just about the time I will be landing in MWD. Sure, I’ll be back on Monday, but M/T/W are full of Aikido and on R—read “Thursday”—I fly to Austin for a long weekend, and who wants to waste their first weekend in Austin watching some dumb gay cowboy sheepherders fall in love, right?

  1. Even being a pseudo-fan of Annie Proulx (I’ve read Postcards and Accordian Crimes) I can’t bring myself to go see Brokeback. I’m afraid of the hype (if Hollywood likes it… I’m sure I won’t).

  2. I went to Austin once for a MS Exchange Conference with a couple of beer drinking fellows. On the last day we went to the Celis Brewery at 2431 Forbes Dr. Since I’m not a beer drinker, I wasn’t particularly excited until we got in the grain room. Now that’s an experience! Every kind of grain and hops piled to the ceiling. The aroma was wonderful. Interesting place to visit.

  3. Chris, I enjoy straight up straight romance and tragic love stories if I can hold my mind in the right place. They leave me alienated and bitter when I slip.

  4. Loewe’s Theatres
    600 N Michigan Ave

It’s right next to the Harley-Davidson store and the ESPN Zone. If you claim to be a senior on the Fandango box, you can get a dollar off.
