Today I was unproductive and unsatisfied and very exhausted, and tomorrow is my last day before another long out-of-state weekend. Both lab printers exploded, though only one wears and “don’t use me—kick me” sign. Nine hours of slogging, unable to do the work I’d spoken for. All that on two cups of strong-aweful coffee and—let’s round up—four hours of sleep.

The dojo was empty at seven. At five after, black-belt Ken would show up, and by seven fifteen there were four single students. Class frustrated me. Throwing the two small women in, e.g. shiho-nage, required more leg strength for deep squatting than I have; my technique was out in left field. Ken applied techniques to me with explicit power and clarity; I was good at not being able to mimic any of it.

That frustration and engagement keeps me going as much as the success and progress.

  2. I think I might have identified the problem with your technique that day:
two women = tiny; veritable ants at the Aikido picnic
Thomas the Bombus = bigger than a life-sized map of the world

  3. Thomas the Bombus!
Has a certain ring to it!
