I waste a large chunk of the morning uploading photos, writing email, and remembering at the last minute to book two nights at the Wang Fat Hostel in Hong Kong. I hope I’m well enough to do shiko in Victoria Park.
I met Zhao Sun Feng — the chemistry post-grad — for lunch on the bar street. We work at a mountain of dumplings, eggplant with pork, and spicy tofu. We talk more — a good outlet for me, and then she insists I take the leftovers when I leave. I really wanted the food for the train, especially the dumplings, but the bad was too akward to carry; I found a beggar woman and child at the train station to feed (easing my conscience a little). I spent a couple hours wandering down to a large shopping district Southeast of the train station. Five to Ten story shopping complexes rise overhead, and a large underground network of shops runs for blocks underground. It’s a lot of shopping; I just scratch the surface on my short walk.
On my way back to the train station, I pick up food and a cheap tea thermos, then get in line just in time to board T238, bound for Guangzhou Dong. All the overhead space near my bunk is taken — grrr — but I fit my pack under the bottom bunk. This is going to be a long 36 hour ride. Excessive sight-seeing, mountain-climbing, and heavy drinking haven’t killed my cold off; perhaps bed-rest will.
