Nick came down to the Far East this morning. We walked “Temple of Heaven”. We saw Mao. Outside his mausoleum we met Simon and Jen — they also saw Mao. We split up — Simon and Jen to the Far East, Nick back to the Jade. We agreed on dinner tomorrow — Simon makes reservations — and Leif has arranged for our tour tomorrow.

I returned to the Far East a bit later, and walked around the hutong nearby before not meeting Nick on Wangfujing for a hotpot dinner. Instead I stopped on the street for dinner, meeting a couple locals. I selected a dish that turned out to be mushrooms and pork, but the Chinese men insisted I share their dishes — noodles, vegetables, and large hunks of roast beef and bone. It was all I could do to escape after one glass of baijiu. Speaking Chinese is dangerous for one’s liver.
