Enroute to Turpan (June 19) · Jun 24, 09:03 AM

It’s a cool and lazy morning. I eat a basket of steamed dumplings and rent a bike to get to a small park south of here for some exercising with the taiji/qigong crowd. After a short workout — at last — I shower. Then I pick up my laundry; they even got the bubble-gum stain out of my green pants. All my socks are clean, too! Davey and I meet up and we grab a car out to the quiet western caves and desert canyon. We return for a lazy lunch with beer at the Friendship Cafe; we make tentative plans to meet up in Kashgar before the Sunday market. I hop online for a bit and take a bus up to Liuyan for my train. Outside the train station I buy large donkey kebabs from a Uighur woman; her beauty strikes me. The grilled bread is good, too — I buy one to go along with some small groceries.

The sleeper is a normal sleeper. I fall asleep pretty quickly, but later than I planed. I walk talking with a Chinese man with a very deep voice and a 5Y tourist hat; he’s from the northeast.
