Enroute to Golmud (July 01) · Jul 14, 04:03 AM

The bus station in Huatugou has no floor. It also has room we turned down yesterday, even before looking into the bathroom. Katie got a facial this morning before our bus. We waited out back in the parking and loading area on green benches pulled from inside. It’s a seventeen hour sleeper, so we’ve stocked up on food and water. Ida has a window bunk; I gave mine to Katie and have a center bunk. We’ve all got bottom bunks — each is about five feet long. The upper third is a sloped backrest, creating a small niche for feet or stuff in the next bunk back. I can stick my feet out into the aisles — carefully not into the trashcans — or curl fetal.

The trip is a long blur of high desert plateau. I slept reasonably well. We made a meal stop at a forlorn little town, but didn’t eat. Katie bought cherry tomatoes and I bought milk biscuits. Ida and I are suffering from diarrhea — we trace it back to a meal in Charklik.
