Think of the consequences. · Nov 16, 08:25 PM

[P]olitical freedom, once established, has a tendency to destroy economic freedom.

To commemorate the death of Milton Friedman, maybe I should register as a Libertarian.

The quote, an observation drawn from a comparison of the post-colonial histories of Hong Kong and India, is taken from Economic Freedom, Human Freedom, Political Freedom. Like Alexander Tyler wrote in Cycle of Democracy,

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising them the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over a louse fiscal responsibility, always followed by a dictatorship.”
