Notes at Sea (Tuesday, April 3) · Apr 18, 08:53 PM

1257 EDT — Control is crowded, but in a very quiet, very alert state. We’re on the surface and preparing for maneuvering watch into Port Canaveral. The testing wrapped up early this morning. We were released after FINEX without signal. In the hall, the captain said the weather topside is great; I’m hoping to get onto the bridge before we hit the dock, but that won’t happen — too busy keeping away the myriad small craft.

The crew — everyone who’s up — is cleaning the ship. Every surface is swept, brushed, wiped, scrubbed, or polished. Every surface, cranny, and nook; it’s seriously meticulous. Ship shape, even. After reveille everyone will be up and scrambling to station the maneuvering watch.

Through last night’s testing I hung out in the sonar shack.. finally handed over my 5 lb. bag of jolly ranchers. They were happy enough. We “shot shit”, covering old-school cartoons and Disney trivia. Anyone remember M.A.S.K or The Popples?

  1. Hi,
I read your blog, which I found online. Reading about sub life was very reminiscent of the life my husband described. He’s a submariner, and we have a product we designed to keep the light out of your eyes in berthing and keep stuff from rolling around. We do them as fundraisers for the boats, they are sold in the Dolphin submarine stores in Groton and Pearl Harbor and even COBs, some officers, and Command Master Chiefs have them. (As well as many, many seaman and up). Here’s the link to our site, if you ever have to go to sea again. And, interesting blog, by the way.

  2. Thanks for the comment :). Looks like a neat product with a great niche market. Good luck!
