So I took advantage of eMusic’s USB offer, and went to town for $0.00 per track:
- Âme, Rej EP. Two tracks. Minimal house that somehow remains clubby. Good music for dancing, but I’m not sure about sitting at home with headphone. May grow on me. [5/10]
- Audion, Suckfish. Wow. Excelent minimal techno. Hurts in a good way. Reminds me of Richie Hawtin and Detroit, even though I’ve never been and I missed out on all the techno. [9/10]
- DJ Sany Pitbull, Baile Funk Masters #2. Baily Funk just isn’t itself without the MC-ing — which is probably obscene and really, er, low-brow — but that’s what this is: a handful of tracks for an MC in Rio. I’m not in Rio, and I’m not an MC, so it’s not terribly great [4/10 for nice beats], but if I were, I’d say maybe [6/10].
- Luiz Bonfá, Solo in Rio 1959. Dear, God — thank you. Jazz guitar from Rio, possibly bossa nova. [10/10]
- Miles Davis, Cookin’ With The Miles Davis Quintet. Good jazz, free and light. I’m not much of a jazz-phile, so I won’t say more. [7/10]
- Sonny Rollins, Saxophone Colossus (Remastered). An “accessible post-bop” musician. Rather lively and fun. [8/10]
- Shpongle, Are you Shpongled?. Advanced music and stranged beats for tripping that works without the drugs and is pleasant to listen to. [9/10]
- The Stanton Warriors, The Stanton Session — It’s advanced clubbing music from the UK, hundred of years beyond our compression. Spans garage, two-step, hip hop, house, big beat. Terribly danceable. [7/10]
I think I’m going to stick out a paid subscription. Who pays for music, I know! Anyhow, it’s three times cheaper than iTunes, there’s an excellent selection of jazz and electronica. Plus, eMusic was stolen from French media conglomerate Vivendi Universal by the private equity group Dimensional Associates. How sexy is that!
