Chris Visits New England · Nov 24, 05:49 PM

Chris & I go Way Back. He lives with his wife in Orlando, and I live with my house-mate and two cats and a golden retriever in Tiverton, RI. Chris was sent up for a weekend by his wife; it was a surprise birthday thing.

FRIDAY (October 19, 2007)

On Friday I met him at the airport and we drove into Providence to park stateside at the gigantic Providence Place mall parking garage. At the nearby Rhode Island State House, two young girls guided us through the chambers, library, and offices. The grand central dome is supported by four columns dedicated to commercium, educatio, justitia, and litera. It’s the fourth largest still standing and self-supporting dome constructed by humans. The rest of the building is built to match.

After the tour we walked around the downtown and across to the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art. Chris commented, “there is more real art in these first two rooms than in the entire state of Florida.” Inflammatory, I know, but the RISD Museum is up there with anything in DC or NYC—and I say that as a big fan of both cities’ museums. We wandered for more than three hours.

I treated Chris to dinner at the Capitol Grille, and myself, too. We each had a martini (you know the waiter is totally onto you when you don’t specify “gin, with a twist”). I had steak worth killing for. Chris had an autumnal wild-salmon encrusted with pumpkin seed. We shared a butternut squash side. We didn’t share deserts.

This is twice now that I’ve had a seriously first class gourmet experience because of Chris. (The third time turned out to be Saturday in Newport.)

SATURDAY (October 20, 2007)

We woke up at a reasonable hour and took breakfast in-house; I had gone shopping Thursday to stock a variety of fruits, drinks, and food-stuffs for Chris.

The day was packed. I’ll be brief:

SUNDAY (October 21, 2007)

More brevity. Breakfast with Lynn at the Barn. A stroll around Summer Mill Pond. A visit to H. P. Lovecraft’s grave in Providence. A picnic, and then an airport drop off.

* * *

  1. Gourmet?
    What, no Ramen noodles on the stove? Sounds like I need to hang out with you two more. I’m always up for great Italian.
