The carotid sinus is the spot on your neck where the carotid artery splits. Pressure on this area may induce the baroreceptor reflex, which would account for my symptoms.

I should be clear the training I’m doing now, even when it gets rough, has been far safer than both aikdo and my Appalachian trail hikes, in terms of injuries per unit of time multiplied by injury severity. It’s on par with my experience playing racquetball or lifting weights. Additionally, my chronic foot pain has been receding. The damage was done during all my long-distance hiking, and the pain was aggravated by a host of activities:

On both of these accounts, I’m in better, safer shape now than I have been for a long time.
